Achieving your goals in 2009

January is typically the time for making – and breaking – resolutions. In my experience, it usually goes one of two ways:

- You make your resolutions on a night out in mid December and have already broken them by Christmas

or

- You think hard about your resolutions over the holiday period, make a list of 20, break the first one on January the 5th then forget about the rest of them when you start planning your holiday for that year.

Crocstar Media went to a networking event last night that had a talk about setting and keeping goals – not new year’s resolutions necessarily – any goals at all.

There were a few things said that were useful; you might think you already know it all, but it’s always good to remind yourself.

- Set one goal at a time. That way you can concentrate all your resources and efforts on achieving a singular thing

- Focus on your goal. Try not to get sidetracked – there’s a lot to be said for visualising what you want to achieve, and visualising yourself achieving it

- Review your progress regularly – don’t be afraid to give yourself a boot up the backside when you need one, and similarly, let yourself have a break if you’re maxed out

- Set a realistic deadline for achieving your goal. There’s no point saying you’re going to build your new website by next week – timetable the things you need to do to get to where you’re going

- And finally, don’t forget to reward yourself for achieving what you set out to do – take yourself out for a drink, or go to the pictures

And good luck with it!
